Glen,
if you are interested, they actually use a fairly simple (rudimentary)
process to measure velocity. It involves using pencils placed in holders
along the track. As the sled travels down the track a blade attached to it
breaks the pencils (and the lead conductor inside) providing the distance
and timing data to determine velocity.
