Neil, I have heard numerous times that Wild Willy Borsch of AA / Fuel
Altered fame ( Marcellus & Borsch ) utilized EXHAUST TUBING in at least
some of his chassis, and after some occasional damage to the frame from
his wild antics while on tour, he would go to a local muffler shop and just
cut and gas weld a new section in as needed !!!!!
Willy was a super showman with his one handed driving style in that
ferocious short wheelbase T roadster motivated by a blown fuel Hemi Chizler
( that was a Chrysler, for you younger guys ) . I believe this tale about
his
car to be true, because in those days many way out things were done in
efforts to reduce weight and stretch the rules beyond their limits .
A regular competitor at our local modified stock car oval finally got
nailed for having way too much electrical conduit in his roll cage until
the tech inspector did a more thorough check of it ....... some guys
put winning ahead of saving their own necks !!!
As for cheating the rule book ....... any of you guys or gals ever
hear of the well known drag team that used to weigh in at the scales with
rear slicks filled with concrete and rocks ??? They might never have
been caught if they had been more careful who was watching when it took
three or four crewmen to load those 'special sneakers' into the tow truck !!!
I doubt if oval track racing' s master rulebook tweaker, our hero
Smokey Yunick, ever tried that one ....... but he WROTE THE BOOK
on taking the written word of the racing association rulebook to entirely new
horizons and definitions !!! I know some on this list were fortunate
enough to have met or worked with him ...... I never did, but I always
considered him to be a true automotive genius and admired his many
racing and engineering accomplishments ....... even the wind generators
on the roof of his " Best Damn Garage in Town " in Daytona .
Sticking to the rules is a pretty good idea if you want to win
fair and square ...... and to walk away from a spill at speed to race
another day !
