Bill,
I am working in the classic car business and I call me an expert in car=20
electrics. When I get a question, often I know the cause of the problem.=20
I am also responsible maintaining and repair cars in a bigger classic car=
=20
collection.
But in order to reliably identify the cause of the problem, I also have to =
carry out certain measurements and if I can't do this myself and have to ex=
plain=20
to someone what to do, then it's often pointless. The other person probably=
doesn't have the necessary measuring device and maybe he doesn't even
understand what else I need to know in order to be able to help at all via =
the Internet. The individual components of the vehicle's electrical system =
and=20
their function and interaction with each other are often not clear to the q=
uestioner. He is simply overwhelmed. If people then answer who don't recogn=
ize
the problem themselves and send the questioner in completely the wrong dire=
ction, then I usually give up because there is no solution in sight.
When it comes to overdrive or clutch problems, I can probably find out very=
quickly whether the clutch or overdrive is the cause. But I have to drive =
the=20
car myself, otherwise I'm going around in circles trying to find the cause.
Resume: The internet is nice, but you can only give help with small errors.=
Otherwise it can end up in chaos and cause more damage than it actually=20
helps. This is often more expensive than taking the car directly to a compe=
tent workshop. Most times its better to tell the questioner to bring his ca=
r to a=20
competent garage. I suspect that=C2=B4s easier here in Europe than in the l=
ess dense areas of the United States or Australia.

The point for an answerer is, you usually do not know about the skills of=
=20
the questioner. So what can you expect, a semi-expert who knows what he/she=
=20
is talking about or one who even doesn=C2=B4t know of what he/she is talkin=

as he/she even doesn=C2=B4t understand what`s ment with the answer.

I, for one, don't necessary expect a 'correct diagnosis'--or any diagnosis,=

for that matter--when I pose a question to the List (or a forum). By the=20
