I have had a backup generic electric fuel pump on my BJ8 to supplement =
the SU since installing it in preparation for the cross-country trip to =
Lake Tahoe in 2002. I=E2=80=99ve always considered the SU the primary =
and the generic the backup. On outbound trips, I=E2=80=99ve used the SU =
and on the return switched to the backup. During the post-Conclave =
Northern States Tour after Deadwood in 2019, I broke away from the group =
to drive over into Montana alone, about a 160-mile loop. Just after =
crossing the state line, and in a cow-country wilderness, I felt the car =
failing to respond to the accelerator. Running on the backup pump, it =
was the one that failed. A quick switch to the SU kept me going =
=E2=80=93 fortunately, since it was now pouring rain. I was able to =
locate another identical generic pump at an Autozone in Minot, ND and =
had it installed in about 15 minutes. =20
I=E2=80=99ve never had the SU fail except early in my ownership in 1984. =
After the Montana failure, I now consider the generic the primary pump =
and the SU the backup. I know if the generic fails again, I can easily =
find a replacement someplace locally. I do exercise the SU =
periodically, just to make sure it is still working.

Well as long as we are being honest about fuel pumps:
=20
Though I use a solid-state SU on my Healey (backed up by an inline FACET =
cube) on both of my Weber-equipped race cars I use a Carter 2040 which =
is THE recommended pump for Webers and of course will work on SU's as =
well.
I've been using the Carters for about 15 years and have never had one =
break down or fail in any way. They're reasonably priced, easy to mount =
and make no unseemly noises.

I know it is sacrilege but I have had very good results with the Bendix =

3000 using an off the shelf T bracket from your local hardware store.
