I think a lot of us use a thin copper wire to seal the combustion chamber
when using the shim steel gaskets. The protrusion has to be less for this
than if it was used without the wire. That may make up the difference
between the two recommendations. As we've discussed, I use
Gasgacinch around the water and oil passages on the steel gasket, and it
helps, but isn;t a cure. Although it seems counterintuitive to cut more off
the gasket, the stamped gasket compresses a little and the hope is that we
get the edges all lined up. The steel gaskets will raise compression a
little more than the Lucas or Cometic.
