While I don?t have any numbers, you are quite correct.

Once, long ago some of my SCCA buddies and I had a conversation with an
engineer from Ford at one of our regional meetings. My question to him was,
why not put BIG disc brakes on the Mustang?

He said that less than 2% of owners take part in any organized competitive
events, hence there is no incentive to tailor the Mustang to ?our? (enthusiast)
market. Of course there are now very good Mustang models out there, but his
assertion still rings true.

I?d say that less than two percent of all car owners take part in ANY organized
competitive events of any kind, so racing would be a tiny subset of that 2%.

FOT,

Would anyone want to venture a guess as to how many drivers there are in the
USA who actually race: vintage organizations, SCCA, Indy, NASCAR, IMSA,
amateur, professional, etc. Not track day, autocross, etc. I?m interested in
calculating the percentage of the population that participated in our world. I
would guess that it is a tiny fraction.

Allen
