I have Vintage raced for twenty years. A couple of years ago I took my
street car, an old 911, to a local Autocross just to give the boys a
lesson. The humiliation of the shellacking I got still burns. The skill,
precision and incredible attention to detail made me feel like the worse
klutz ever behind a wheel. It brought back that same feeling I got the
first time I tried to fly a radio control airplane. As an old pilot with
thousands of hours I felt I knew something about flying. In both
situations I never got into the loop. With respect to Autocrossers on the
FOT list, I secretly record with great respect their every move. To my eye,
at least, they are a different breed of cat. But I suspect a cat with an
extraordinary degree of refinement. To loose them from the "racers list"
would be a serious loss. If you doubt this, go out and run a few cones
with them. It'll be an eye opener.
