true, the heater core cares not from where the water enters or leaves.
It is just a matter of convenience/asthetics with the flexible hoses in the
engine bay as to which is in or out.
If you are going for originality, you will need to adhere to any pictures
you have of the factory setup.
I ran a 12V gel cell in my P510 4 door(FJ20 with EFI) for some time, worked
well and was truly maintenance free.
It wasn't for automotive use but was designed for deep cycle useage.
If you can afford the initial layout they are the bees knees!
