I watched part of "Yank Tanks" last night (on Sundance I think).  It's a
documentary about the guys who are keeping the '40s and '50s American cars
imported to Cuba alive.  The trade embargo pretty much slammed the door on
parts availability, their government doesn't allow them to have large shops
or industrial tools, and they have to scrape raw materials together from the
street.  One guy uses wire from his chain-link fence as welding rod for body
work, another actually sifts raw asbestos into some home-brew mix and uses
it to reline brake shoes in his house.  They basically swap anything that
works into anything that doesn't.  They've got 55yr old American cars
powered by 45yr old Russian engines, and they are still on the road.  Now
that's a hybrid.
