bouncy tach?

Thanks for all the info about testing the tach... after reattaching the
cable, the tach now reads something...... but it oscillates lots!  at idle
the needle bounces from about 500 to 4000 very very rappidly, as i rev the
engine, the bouncing gets less and less, to a minimum of about 2000 rpms.
has anyone experienced this? /  any ideas?
