John,

I'm a novice in experimenting with needles, but perhaps your jets are
mismatched to the needles. The jets themselves may be worn and causing a
rich flow of gas. Just a hunch. Sometimes it's better to swap in new jets
at the same time as installing new needles.

Also, maybe I'm a novice but I'm not stupid (some of you BADROC guys can
stop chuckling now!). The mechanic who set up the carbs for my P.O.
severely profiled the needles by filing them flat on one side, causing
quite a few problems. My installing a new set of needles cured them. So if
someone suggests tampering with the needles by filing them think long and
hard about doing so!

Two things:

I tuned up the 2L on Saturday in prep for driving to Road America on
Sunday. Since I set the valves, timing, and dwell, I decided it was a good
time to replace my N25 needles with the N17s that were suggested for my
rich idle condition. I am running a 7.5 distributer with timing set to 16
degrees. With the new needles in and each carb turned out to 1.5 turns
for mixture, it was running VERY rich. I turned each carb in a quarter
turn at a time and it still was rich. I mean blowing smoke at idle and on
acceleration. I pulled off the domes and found raw gas laying in the
bottom of the carbs.

I replaced the new needles with the old N25s and I was back to only rich at
idle and only a small amount of backfire at downshift.

SECOND:

I too have a howel over 40mph coming from the rearend. I think it is my
wheel bearing on the right side but here is the symptom. I replaced the
left bearing and seal last year. With both wheels off the car, when I turn
the hub, on either side, there is a ratcheting feeling. Feels like a bad
bearing, but is it really the wheel? I know, if I really want to know, tear
it down and look. I would rather have the replacement parts in hand before
tear down and I want to order the right parts. Any thoughts or someone with
the same thing before?
