I too have the long, tapered, hard black plastic knob and my toy is a late 
'68.

Mike,  I also have the plastic wood grained knob with the griffin on it.  I
have been told by a few folks that I thought were in the know that it was 
the
original knob.  My car is is a 67.5.  Are you saying that the long, tapered,
hard plastic knob was stock?  I have only see a few of them, and only on 69
or '70's.
