Since the noise went away when you put in a new tensioner, it sounds like there
could have been some
crud in the passages. Did you use any kind of gasket sealer on the tensioner
gasket when you put the
head on? I know some people don't use any on the tensioner, since it is two
machined surfaces. I use
a VERY light coat of KopperKote on the paper gasket and make sure taht none
gets into the passage in
the tensioner.
I think the only service on a tensioner is to replace it.
