I bought my current 1600 with a bad first gear, with the assumption that I
could just drive it until I have the time to swap the tranny from the parts
roadster in. So I've been driving the thing for the past ~2 months with just
2-4th gears, and everything's been fine...till today! My symptoms:
- putting tranny into 2nd or R will elicit a very nice grinding of gears.
- I can put it into either 2nd or R, if I slam it in quick and hard (still a
little grinding, but not as bad).
- sometimes when I depress the cluch and put it into R, the car will move
even with the clutch fully depressed.
- I am now forced to try and rev match the engine before putting it into 2nd,
and that sometimes results in a very smooth engagement (but not always).
I do not know much about trannies at all, so all I can assume is that I've
gotta have at least a bad 2nd gear syncro, and maybe some forks are out of
whack...? The car is still drivable, but at this rate, those gears are
probably not going to last too long if I have to keep on grinding them...
