Sure-
put new rope seal in oil.
wait a week. Make sure you have the side seals for the rear main cap.
They are, apparently, NOT oil-resistant and die in a year or two!
(pull engine, flip, pull crankshaft. Last time I did mine, I left the
head on, pistons in)
Squeeze new seal into place, using any and all means necessary to get
it squished down. Start with thumb pressure, and go from there. I used
a ball pein hammer once. The key here is that the seal CAN'T be allowed
to cock the rear main cap. So it's gotta be about the right thickness
to start with.
Trim the ends off REALLY carefully, flush with block and cap, (new
sharp razor blade) then use some oil-resistant RTV on the joint.
Coax the rear cap back into place, and you're back to normal automotive
land.
Why hasn't anyone come up with a retrofit for this thing? It's a
pain! Why, on the rear seal on my 2002, it's a 2 hour job! ANd that
INCLUDES dropping the tranny! Oh well, character is why we own these
cars, no?
