Several of us in the Corvair world have Tempests (not me!), but most are the
4-banger variety. Since the drivetrain shares some parts (but most just design)
with the early Corvair, we've no had major issues maintaining it.
However, the swing axle rear makes for, ummm, interesting handling at the limit
on such a large car. the ride is nice, though.
Tempests tend to show up with great regularity on Ebay and tarderonline.com, but
finding one with the V8 is not common.
In my opinion, the best GM version was the '63 Special. A buddy has one of
these
with the 4bbl 215, 4sp, posi, and factory AC! Arizona car, so no rust. No, it's
not for sale... and if it was I'd grab it first! ;-)
