I have a friend who is a car nut and a private jet pilot. He just bought 
a VW Rabbit for about $19k which was not a GTI but did have some sort of 
handling package and a 5-speed manual trans. He says that the car is an 
absolute HOOT to drive even without all the fancy stuff from the GTI.  
Seems he started shopping for a car for his teenage daughter but now 
uses it all the time himself.  Sounds like a flashback to the good old 
hot hatchback.
