Your clutch disk was stuck to the flywheel (or less likely the pressure
plate).  Over time, the rust on the flywheel seems to grab on to the disk
material.  I suppose any car could do this, but it usually seems to be a
Triumph trick for some reason.

Other TR owners have had it REALLY stick and had to resort to more
violence than you did.

When the car is in storage, push in the clutch pedal and move the car a
bit once in a while.  Maybe just pushing in the clutch pedal is really all
you need.  The first time you use the clutch to drive, the light rust is
all cleaned off.
