Well, I went ahead and bought an American replacement fuel pump for my Midget.
It's a Carter, and is supposed to put out between 5.5 and 9 PSI. I installed
it last night, just to see if it would work at its stated pressure.

It seemed to work fine, stopping when it had filled the float bowls. Every 5
seconds or so, though, it ran for a second (the engine was not running). I was
curious, as I didn't see any fuel leaking anywhere, so I lifted the carb
pistons. Fuel was merrily bubbling out of the jets and down the carb throats,
past the butterfiles and into the intake manifold.

I'm guessing that the problem is excessive fuel pressure. I'll install a
pressure regulator this weekend and see if that solves the problem.
