Try this Gedankun experiment.

build a torque wrench with a bunch of little torque meters in it.

-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx
| |---xx-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx
-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx-------xx

lengend:
---- xx -----
| | is the socket xx is a little torque meter ----- is the bar.
---- xx -----

What do all the little torque meters read? If one is different from
its neighbor, there is a force on the bar in between, hence the bar
will rotate until all little meters read the same.

Therefore the extension doesn't matter. Doesn't matter if you put the
extension on the socket, and it doesn't matter if you put and extension
on the handle. the torque applied will be the same.
