Mini runneth over (to coin a phrase)

I tried posting about this earlier but didn'r seem to get through.

My mini has a problem similar to that of somebody who posted about
their MGA.

I drive off in the car and the temp guage gets gradually hotter
(from cold), it goes just over Normal and then starts gushing water
out of the radiator cap bypass hose (and then the guage reads cold
because there's not as much water in the system).

I replaced the cap a short time ago (before this problem became
evident) so perhaps I too have been given an incorrect cap?

This is the first time I've been able to drive the car on the
road for some time. It hasn't happened when it's just sitting
running on the drive presumably because it just doesn't get
hot enough. The car runs fine otherwise (apart from a little
pinging when it gets *really* hot :) )

Are these classic signs or does anything else spring to mind?

Thanks

Steve.
