Solex Carb question

Hello,
  I have a question about the Solex carburators on my '59 Jaguar MK 1.
The car has the 2.4L XK engine, and is exhibiting signs of being too
lean:  it fires back up through the carbs (is this called a "stack-fire"?),
and tends to run a little hot.  Anyway, my question is: what adjustments 
might I try to make to these carbs other than the "idle mixture" adjustment?

The carbs are model 32PBI, and have manual chokes.  They have been
recently rebuilt- though the car showed the same behavior before the
rebuild.  They are probably not balanced very well at the moment
either. 

The problem happens only when you suddenly open the throttles from
low RPM- the motor stackfires, hesitates and sometimes even quits.
Curiosly, what get's kicked back up through the carbs is usually 
*not* burning, it is an unburned mixture of fuel and air.  I'm really
hoping I don't have a stuck/bent intake valve... but am hopefull as
I can't see how that problem would be throttle/vacuum dependant.
Other than this problem, the motor seems to run great.  It is idling
smoothly, and will rev very nicely, so long as you don't open the throttles
too suddenly.  I have checked/rebuilt the distributor and associated 
vacuum advance; I am now confident that ignition timing is OK.  I have
watched the motor stackfire (with a timing light) and there is nothing
unusual happening with the timing.

Is there anything else I should be checking (fuel pressure for instance)?

Out of curiosity, what other Brit-cars came with these carbs.  I believe
that Jaguar only put them on the Mark 1 cars, and only those Mark 1's of 
the 2.4L variety.
