Nice summary, Roger.
The good ol' smoke wrench is the classic scrap yard method for removing large
recycleable bits from junk cars. Not to be too pedantic, but I would more
describe it as localized melting and blowing away the liquid metal. Most
appropriate for steel, though not for aluminum or stainless.
At our lab we have cut 12" thick steel slabs using a torch that runs on a
track at about 1/4" per minute.
