On the legality of changing engines. One solution is for the local
MG club to have a "smogged" 1800 sitting around. Once a year each
club member could put the engine in their respective car, get it smogged
checked and reinstall the 1950cc hot rod motor. I know from experience
I can swap an engine in my '71 MGB-GT in half a day. A friend offered me
an engine in an MGB for the taking. I drove up to his house with an engine
hoist, jack stands, and floor jack in a trailer. In an hour his engine was
in my trailer and I was on my way home. MGA's however are quite different.
It takes at least 75% of the time to think of new threats to yell at the car
with. The other 25% is used planning how to use the money after you sell it.
Anyway. Get a spare "legal" motor if you insist on living in a state that
wants to sniff your tailpipe.
Perhaps you could get a spare car and swap windscreens! Thats the ticket!!!.
