Should I or shouldn't I?

I am the proud quasi-owner [long story] of a lovely 1964 Mini
Cooper-S. Current condition is really sweet, except for a small bit of
gearbox trouble -- there's a small bit of the gearbox fished out of
the sump. Just a bearing cage bit, maybe a third of one.

Now, I'm pretty good with things mechanical, but have no experience
with autos. Some sources I've asked say "yikes! don't everever open
your own gearbox. Trained professionals only .." and others say "what
the hell? Take it apart, line it up and push it back together." So.
The two part question is ..

1) Well, should I bite the bullet and break open my own gearbox?
2) Anyone out there in the New York City area [not REALLY at Stanford
anymore] willing to take on a bit of gearboxxing and instruction as a
weekend or two summer project?

Hidden part (3) Know anyone interested in a sweet 1964 S 1275?
