Thanks for the help to those who answered my question about
format of the archive sol/pic files.

Turns out that the magic formula (at least for Apollo workstations)
is to uudecode the file from the archive. Then run it through
the bsd4.3 uncompress (my apollo has sys5 and bsd4.3 as two distinct
environments with Aegis as the third. i am soo confused!), then
run that back through uudecode again.  The results are a gif file.

Works great when you do it right.
