Heh, heh. A few years ago, when I made a fast drive from London to
Penzance and back, I neglected to ask the basic motorway speed before
I started. "Ah, well," said I, "I'll just follow the traffic."
I quickly found that recent U.S. speed limits had gotten me unaccustomed
to driving at 85-90 mph. Whenever I was stopped, I forgot to ask anyone.
Then I would get back into traffic and wonder anew if the speed limit
were really 85 or so. I never did see a motorway speed-limit sign.
Finally, after driving London->Penzance->Winchester, I remembered to
ask someone, and was told something like 60 or 65 mph. Yoiks!

Oh, yes: I never saw a cop on the motorway.
