Well, I'm happier now. Our move from Columbia, SC to Norcross
(Atlanta), GA is just about complete. The basement (shop) is still
a cardboard box zoo (as is much of the rest of the house) but we
returned to Columbia Saturday and retrieved the TR6 which had been
parked at a friend's house for almost two months.

Pulled off the NASTY car cover (car was parked outside under trees),
got in, crossed fingers, and turned the key. Crank, crank, crank,
but nuthin' else. Swallow hard, pause to collect thoughts and
battery, and try again. Fired up and soon settled down to a relatively
smooth idle.

And we're off on the ~240 mile trek to Atlanta. Made it with no
problems but interstate cruising is NOT one of its better tricks.
With no OD, the engine really sings at 65-70 mph cruise. Fun for
a little while, but then boredom, noise, and cramped quarters starts
to set in. Some 4+ hours later it pulled into its new garage home
(and this time the garage is even going to be used for a car!).

A general tuneup is now in order; there's a bit of ragged idle and
sputtering off idle. I may even try turning a few of the carb
adjustment screws (don't panic, I won't just arbitrarily turn screws,
but will RTFM first).

I'm sure others feel the same way, but I'd like to offer a public
thanks to Scott Fisher for his engine rebuild hints/notes the
other day. I've done a lot of car repairs over the years, but
never been "inside" and engine yet. Maybe one of these days...

Couple of questions for the group.

- How do I clean a technalon (sp?) car cover. I have general dirt
and filth, plus some pine tree droppings to contend with.

- What are my chances for success with a do-it-yourself repair on
an odometer? Mine is stuck. Actually it moves a tenth from time
to time, but generally acts as though an internal gear is slipping
on a shaft. The speedometer works OK. Any experience with the
speedometer repair places I see advertised in Hemmings?

- One of the fun things I get to look forward to here in Georgia, is
a smog test for car registration. Is this going to be a nightmare
to pass, or just a formality for a 1972 vehicle.

Cheers,
Joe Flake
