Thanks for the comparison, Bill. Just one caution which may help
to explain why the performance is more similar than the numbers
would indicate. The roadster HP numbers are SAE (or JIS?) gross,
while the Miata is rated SAE net. Is there a rule of thumb for
conversion?

I just got a copy of "Car and Driver on Datsun Z, 1600, 2000 1966-1984."
Catchy title. Several good articles on roadsters and LBCs. Comparing
the roadsters to the British cars, they liked the build and paint
quality, loved the engine and transmission (2000), and disliked the
suspension. In terms of numbers, the 2000 was faster 0-60 and 1/4 mile
than a TR250 or TR6 (but only a little.) There was the usual gratuitous
Japan-bashing (this can't be a real sports car since the Japanese couldn't
possibly build such a thing, after all they never did before.) Strangely
enough, there was no hint of that by the time the 240Z came along.
