It's true: corrosion takes the shine out of polished aluminum and brass
very quickly. I would never bother to polish anything without at least covering
it with some clear lacquer, or maybe clear Krylon, to keep it shiny. Another
alternative is chrome plating. Aluminum _CAN_ be chrome plated, and then it
stays shiny. Of course, chrome plating is hardly a hobbyist technique, so that
limits its use to those of us with deep pockets! Another possibility is nickel
-plating, which _CAN_ be done at home. There is a british company called
"Dynic" that markets a home nickel-plating kit. The nickel goes on dull, but
can be
buffed up almost as shiny as chrome. Dynic advertises in Classic Bike
magazine.
