Bill asked for information on how long the test engines
were run for. Well, the article doesn't give details
but there are some examples which give an idea of the
equivalent mileage:

One very bad engine showing 3mm of wear in 8000 miles.
A test with a lead substitute showed 25 mill wear in 14000 miles.
Another engine suffering 1mm wear in 14000 miles.

So I guess that the tests were all in the 10000 mile
equivalent region and certainly not, say, 100000 miles.

Also on the subject of rpm, the article says that at
below 2000rpm valve seat wear is very much reduced.
