>From the sound of it, you haven't taken it apart all the way. It sounds like
all you've done so far is remove the coil from the solenoid. The steel shaft
is just a sleeve. Inside it you'll find a steel armature and a spring. Be very 
careful when you unscrew the sleeve as the spring will like to shoot out. 
Once you've gotten it apart, clean it as good as you can. I like to manually
open and close the doors, using the rams to push the crude back through. Like
Kim said, use power steering fluid to lube it, and make sure your lube system
is filled with power steering fluid.
