I have also noticed a problem in the starter solenoids in Bricklins. I am
not sure as to why but lately I have been having to replace more and more of
them at the shop. The most recent one had actually kinda exploded (the bottom
metal piece was broken away from the plastic housing). Others I have had to
change because they would stick in the start position and continue to try to
start the car whether you had the key in the ignition or not. Since
jumpering your starter solenoid got your car started... the first place to
look
would be the wiring to the start terminal (small red wire plugging onto the
terminal marked S ) which routes down to the Neutral Safety switch. This wire
should have 12 volts on it when you have the key in the start position only.
Personally, I have started keeping a testlight with me in whatever car I am
driving just for this kind of purpose.
