Michael,

I'd check the wires with an ohm meter to be sure you have the right ones.

1. One of the blacks wire that goes from the electric choke to the stator.
2. The other black wire goes to the ground lug.
3. Your Brown (on my car - I'm pretty sure its blue) goes from the field
   lug on the Alt. to the "F" lug on the voltage regulator.
