Low compression smog motors can't handle much extra cfm without headers,
different ignitions.

You don't define 'respectable', but a Holly 650cfm double pumper spreadbore
on
an Edlebrock, or equal dual, plane intake will give much improved off idle
throttle response and allow it to pull to it's RPM peak. Headers will be
necessary to
extract the most from this combo. More ignition advance will be required
also.

This combo will have air cleaner hood clearance problems. A single plane
intake would be a little lower, but off idle performance and driveability
will suffer.

None of this will have any dramatic affect on overall dragstrip performance
due to the fact that you won't be able to hook it up with any reasonable
street suspension / tire combo. Mid track performance should be much better
though.
