Michelle,

Driving a stick shift is MUCH easier than riding a bicycle.

MJ is right. All you really have to do is get it up to second gear. That's one
shift, and your problems are over.

New cars are much easier to learn on. Much easier than, say, a 1979 Ford Pinto
with a Montgomery Wards clutch.

When I first started autocrossing, when I was 8 years old (that makes me 24) my
biggest fear was stalling in front of everyone, which did happen in a way that
I did not expect. But other things happened to. Like at the driver's school in
front of all the teachers and students, I turned on the car while the engine
was still running. The car made a really sick grinding sound. That got a lot of
attention. And I know that I started the car once while it was in gear, so yes,
then I stalled, I mean violently lurched, in front of everyone, complete with
tire squeals and everything. That must have lasted about five seconds because I
didn't know what to do. And then I ran over somebody's helmet.

And you see? I'm still here to tell the tale. And now I'm taking my natural
talents and applying them to bicycling.

Michelle, you'll be FINE.

Katie
