I have on occasion transported a set of tires thusly:  two in pax seat, one
behind pax seat, one on shelf under rear window.  I don't know if this is an
option for you, since your rear window is glass, but it might be worth a
shot.

And you won't be able to fit two tires in the trunk; I've tried it.
