Well I don't know about useless.  If you have one,
I'm sure they would honor it.  But if you don't,  hey
the world is a pretty small place these days, and
everybody knows what a CA driver license is,
especially if they are in an English speaking
country.  I have rented cars and a motorcycle
in Canada, Germany, the UK, Fiji, Norway, France,
and Spain with nothing more than my CA DL.
I've even been stopped by traffic cops in
Spain with zero problems.

If your friend is there long term s/he should
probably get an Oz license anyway,  and if
it's short term,  I'm sure an USA DL would
be fine.

The ultimate source would be the AUS consulate
