Here while back, we were talking about painting loaner helmets some
bright fluorescent color so they could be easily spotted and returned to
the starting line quickly. But, if you've priced traditional
fluorescent spray paint, you know that it's about $3 or $4 per can.
However, if you've got a "Big Lots" store in your community, you might
want to check their paint supply. I just found some bright yellow/green
fluorescent paint at the Big Lots here in Shreveport for 89-cents a
can!!! It's a little more yellow than the Safety Steward hats. Tried
it out on our start/finish milk crates and it worked just fine. Can't
NOBODY say they didn't see the finish now!!! The helmets are next!

You DO need to lay down a flat white base coat if you're going to use it
on something dark, but I found some flat white spray paint at Lowes for
96-cents a can. All they had at Big Lots was gloss white and that
doesn't make a very good base. You can probably find some even cheaper
than that if you look around.

Also, before you paint your helmets, be sure to use a very fine grade of
steel wool or emery paper to scuff up the glossy finish so the paint
will stick better.

Hope that helps some of you who have been put off by the high cost of
fluorescent spray paint.
