I ran my '98 2.8 A4 (front drive) in GS last year. I think it could be
competitive but its not a really fun autox car (IMHO). Its just too big
and the steering, although fast is lacking in feel big time.

As far as 2.8 vs 1.8 goes, the tuners all like the 1.8t because they can
control the waste gate opening with the ECU. That means that chipping
the car can easily produce an extra 50hp (of course that eliminates it
from GS). The 1.8t is also about 4k cheaper. However I am very happy
with the mid-range power of the 6. I thought the 4 was lacking. I don't
think the weight will make that big a diff.

Bimmer vs Audi. The mags all favor the 328 as having better road feel.
It's a little faster too. All that said I have seen more A4s in GS than
BMWs.

Any way you go these are expensive cars to beat up on in auto-x
(although others certainly have a lot more invested.) How about a beater
Civic or Golf? More fun less money.

Regards,
Alan
