Welcome back!
Don't know about the "desoldering" since mine have all failed due to a leak
in the tube and I've always assumed that this was a "factory only" fix (or
a specialist who would have to charge more than the price of new guage).
There is a fluid (alcohol?) in the tube I think.
I "coil" any excess tube VERY carefully. Think "no kinks".
