Lauri,

In my experience even oil condition is not a good indicator for the condition 
of the
overdrive, (although oil with brass specks is a very bad sign).

Basically to know if the overdrive hasnt been abused, you have to pull the OD 
unit apart
and inspect the sun, planets and anulous gear faces, and also the planet 
bearings since
this is a common sign of failure.  Look also for heat discoloration of the 
planet carrier
this indicates the bearings have been very hot before.
