You are correct: it was a square section 'o' ring.  I have replaced them in
the past using drive belts for tape recorders and turntables from Radio
Shack.  They are available in different sizes and cross sections.

In addition to the previously offered dash-to-gauge O-rings, I can now
supply the rubber square cross-sectioned ones as originally used on 52mm,
80mm, 100mm and 120mm Smith and Jaeger  gauges

I still supply the inner (glass-to-bezel) and third internal one for 100mm
Jaeger gauges.  Prices start at $3 for a set of two O-rings for a 52mm
gauge.
