Ammeters are wired into the circuit so they show only net charge/discharge.
The alternator could be putting out the full 35 amp charge, but with a 30
plus amp load, the ammeter would show only a amp or two charge going to the
battery.
I may be wrong here, but I think that an AC voltage reading would be
indicate AC voltage leak from the alternator into the DC system.
