I'd agree that the most likely cause would be ignition, then juice.

Worn points, in particular, where the gap is almost closed, can cause 
spectacular backfiring, so as to frighten the horses in the next county.

I'm assuming the ignition is stock, rather than the electronic upgrade, which 
is most cases gives a binary result.

However, it is the phenomenon of the erratic guages which causes me to 
suspect the charging system, which could be simply eliminated.
