Timing Confusion

Fellow listers,

I was trying to reset my timing using the method prescribed in the Workshop
Manual. ie marking the aligned BTDC (around 10degrees for the Series 4) with
the marker on the timing cover and rotating the distributor (across the LT
connection and earth) until a test lamp just lights. This I seemed to have
done ok, but then when I tried to check it with the engine running at around
1000RPM (and an extra 3degrees marked) and the vacuum pipe disconnected, the
timing mark was nowhere nowhere near the timing cover pointer - about three
inches away towards me!

Any tips? Am I doing something wrong here? by the way I've fitted new points
to 0.015" and a new condenser.

Any help as always will be gratefull recieved (as I was to the use the Alpine
to drive to see the folks over Christmas)

Wishing you all a happy Christmas and peaceful New Year
