One of the many reasons to consider this valve
(http://tr6.danielsonfamily.org/HeaterValve.htm) as long as you're not in to
"originality". It works easily and won't fail like the stock ones.

I know that on my 76, the valve doesn't turn off all the water going through
the heater core unless I push it just a little further by hand.

valve, to be sure that the valve is working as it should. Do this check with
the engine up to operating temp, and with the hood up long enough to rid the
hose of underhood heat sink. If still in doubt, pinch off this hose with a
pair of long nose ViseGrips.
