David---I don't use a torque wrench when tightening this canister bolt,
either. A 5/8 inch socket on a 24 inch extension on a 3/8 inch ratchet
works well. The "lighter" ratchet ensures I don't get crazy about
tightening this bolt, but I DO snug it up to where no oil comes past the
O-ring in the block!

I only change to a new O-ring about every three years.

Scribing a circle (in the paint) around the perimeter of the canister,
about 3/16 inch from the open end, helps me to guide the canister evenly
into the block recess. This scribed line will show that there is no one
side that didn't seat properly. Masking tape can also be used around the
canister body to show the same thing, if one doesn't like to scratch the
paint here.

I guess an obvious question here is how tight do you make the connecting
bolt. When I had the canister filter I put a torque wrench on it and it
was TIGHT. Don't recall the setting as it has been a while but it was
not 25 ft lbs. It was the only way I could prevent the reenactment of
the Exxon Valdes in my garage.
