David,
I just installed a puller fan myself.
Rather than using a fixed temperature to activate the fan, I wanted an
adjustable one.
Therefore I ordered a standard adjustable thermostat switch + extra relay by
mail order for about $20.
The thermostat sensor was clamped to the metal pipe running from the radiator
back to the engine.
I found that the location of the sensor / switch doesn't matter very much. The
temperature seems to vary the same way wherever you measure it, except that
the value may differ. With the adjustable thermostat it is easily compensated
for.
Works great, both regular and high speed driving.

I'm planning to use a screw-in temperature probe with the 16" electric
puller fan
I'm installing. Can this sensor (3/8"-18) be screwed into the spot on
the water
pump currently occupied by the stock TR temp sensor rather than welding
a bung into the radiator for it?

Thanks for any help!
