Bob----I, too, like clarity. Some on the list take what us "old timers"
say, and run with it! Perhaps overlooked in my reply to Doug was in
referencing what tires he said was on his car...that being 185 "65"
15, which we know to be about two inches shorter than stock, even when
going plus one with the wheels.
However, if Doug really wants to stay with the same diameter as his
present tires, then the 215x "50" x16 would be right on, at around 24.5
diameter.
That's a lot of wheel well exposure, not to mention the true speed
error.

ARGHHHHH!
Hi,
Just to be clear on the topic, the stock tires were 185/78-15 (as Dick
Taylor said), but the 215/60-15's are the same diameter as stock. I
believe 215/50-15 will be slightly shorter than the stock tire.
the above should be 215/60-16
The stock tires are 26.65 inches in diameter.
225/60-15 tires are 26.63 inches diameter, 225/50-15 are 24.86 inches in
both of the above are 16", not 15"
diameter. This is a significant difference, about 7% which would be
outside acceptable limits - although the speedo would read higher than
actual speed, so you could drive around "speeding" (according to the
speedo) and you'd probably be "legal".
:-)
If a reference point is needed, I run 215/65-15's. These are 26.0 inches
in diameter, so I have to drive a little faster than everyone else when
we tour... but of course, we all knew that anyway. Right?
I run 215/65-15's (for now).
